Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.....

Today, Erin, Sarah, Jessie, and I made thank you cards for BICAS to give to artists who donate work to the auction.  Erin and Jessie both carved lovely bike-related designs and we all printed them.  The cards looked really great, and I think it will be nice for the artists to receive a handmade card.  I had a great time printing the cards and was surprised by how quickly we were able to print them.  It was also a great way for us to get to know each other better and is a testament to how art can create community.

Mobiles and Mall

Last Friday, the Art Auction group had our mobile workshop at BICAS.  Emma, Shantaye, and I facilitated.  The attendance was not as good as at the jewelry workshop, but a few people trickled in later.  We are grateful to our class members who came!

Emma and Shantaye both made incredible mobile examples and gave great demonstrations.  The participants seemed to enjoy the workshop and we received some wonderful donations.

Tuesday was our last UA mall workshop.  I was happy to see a couple of non-class members sit down and join us in making bracelets and wallets.  In addition to gathering artwork donations, we also spread the word about the auction and BICAS in general.

Making intertube wallets in the sunshine...

The Art Auction Group had our first workshop on the UA mall Tuesday.  Several of us arrived early to setup the tables and supplies.  Shortly after, the setup crew began making more samples and donations.  We had some issues with the tent, but fortunately, we were able to fix it later.  Our group is grateful to the entire class for coming and making wallets and coin purses.  We have some really wonderful pieces to donate and it seemed like everyone enjoyed themselves.

Thursday after class, we began discussing what the next mall workshop will entail and we are still discussing those details.  We are hoping to generate more interest for BICAS next week and begin spreading the word about the auction.

Emma, Shantaye, and I will facilitate the next BICAS workshop (mobiles) on Friday.  We are in the process of making some examples, printing some mobile images, and collaborating regarding how we will structure the demonstrations.

Jewelry!

This was a busy BICAS week.  Tuesday, Shana, Jessi, Angie, and I met with Casey to discuss the jewelry and mall workshops.  I told Casey I hope we are not bombarding her with questions and meetings and she said we are actually making her job easier.  She is very happy about all of the work we are doing.  I took home several bike parts and soaked, scrubbed, and simple-greened them before making two bracelets, a necklace, and a pair of earrings.  It is truly addictive and I had to literally put the supplies away so I could get back to work on my thesis!

Tonight was our jewelry workshop.  Shana was great at organizing the supplies and Jamie, Jessi, and I all helped put things in her neatly labeled bowls.  Jessi made a beautiful necklace and Shana made a binder with how-to images that were very helpful.  I was very disappointed with my demonstration as I didn't ask everyone to come in closer from the start.  Some large photos of each step would have been helpful as well, but I was grateful that Shana's book served that purpose.  If you all had been teenagers, perhaps I would have remembered how to teach!  I kept thinking community teaching is much different than school teaching, and I treated it differently, but I don't think it is that different after all.

Other than that, the workshop went well.  We counted about 20 participants and they made some really nice pieces.
