BICAS Audio Project

BICAS is a great organization that reaches out to the Tucson community in a number of ways, so I thought it would be fun and productive to conduct a practice-based research project through the medium of sound. Over the next few weeks, I will be interviewing BICAS organizers, participants in their programs, and community members who have taken part in outreach and art services BICAS offers away from their home base.

My goal is to create a podcast/self-contained digital audio piece that BICAS can use to advertise itself on the internet and the radio in order to raise awareness of the variety of services they offer to a wider audience. During this process I also hope to address some questions I have about how community-based organizations can reach people who don't know about or don't seek out the services they provide, either because of a lack of awareness or because they might have preconceived notions about how the services the organization offers would benefit them as artists, or possibly because they do not feel included in the community the organization serves. I think many organizations and communities can gain a better understanding of community-based arts through this research, and consequently the community that can be served by organizations like BICAS can become larger and more diverse.

Since I don't have any visual evidence to share just yet as part of my project, here are two paintings that I made to donate to the art auction. They will also be displayed in Stuart and Kasey' awesome pop-up gallery on the U of A mall.
