Let's get started!

Reaching different demographics is our challenge. The University of Arizona campus is an ideal location to promote BICAS in that there are multiple communities within the campus area, all of which would benefit from the influence of such a great organization. Our group banded together to create a workshop which would interest people who might not know about BICAS but would also benefit people who already do! In creating our instruction sheet, as I began writing out our directions, I realize a couple of things. First, I’ve never written instructions aimed at adult learners, 5 year olds I know, 10 year olds, no problem, but adults...that is tricky. Second, not only do I have to make sure this sheet clearly illustrates the process of repurposing bike parts to make something new, but I have to remember that not everyone knows how to sew. So now, it’s like a double instruction sheet, here’s how you make bike bags an here’s how you sew. At this point I see that I am facing some new challenges. But it’s okay; this is what I’m aiming for, right? I want to learn how to affectively teach varying age groups so what a perfect opportunity!

So as we start the preparation for our workshop, it all becomes pretty simple. We make bike bag patterns, we cut out templates, we make our spoke cards, and with almost no effort at all, I write up the instruction sheet. It looks good! It’s clear, it looks inviting and I’m really excited for the workshop to see how it works out. And, I’m not going to lie; the spoke cards are my favorite part. They’re hilarious and it’s going to be hard to give them away! I just want to keep them all!
