Over the past week, I have been working on a date for the pop-up gallery. After consulting Casey at BICAS, we decided that this Tuesday, November 15th is the best date for all parties involved. At first, my partner, Stuart, and I were considering hosting the event on the UA Mall. However, after thinking about the project, we decided that the gallery should be positioned in the midst of all of the art buildings.
The gallery will have a bohemian feel, showcasing the works of graduate and undergraduate students in Dr. McClure's community art classes. Additionally, there will be pieces made by local elementary and middle school students! All pieces are either made of recycled bike parts, or have cycling as subject matter. After being exhibited at the pop-up gallery, all pieces will be taken to BICAS and donated to the annual auction.
The purpose of the gallery is to increase awareness about BICAS to the UA arts community. Although many students are deeply passionate about the arts, many are unaware that there are amazing opportunities to get involved with the local arts community in Tucson. This is not only true for out of state students, but Tucson locals as well. As stated in a 2011 article about independent artist run centers, a sense of community is necessary among art non-profits. The article reveals that any space, formal or informal can be transformed into "a meeting place, an informational hub and a clearinghouse between the local environment and the global one. It facilitates co-operation, alliance, partnership and collaboration..." (Blessi, Sacco, and Pilati 146). Pop-up galleries perfectly fill this function, offering a collaborative connection between UA students and BICAS.
Along with artwork, the gallery will also provide promotional and informational materials about BICAS, so if you have any friends who want to learn more about getting involved, tell them about this event!
I hope to see you all this Tuesday!
