The Sugar Skulls Workshop at BICAS was super cool! Megan Howe and I arrived at 3:30pm on Tuesday, October 25th to set up for the workshop scheduled for 4:00pm. Lara Somers visited us as well to participate and give us some moral support J Together we brought in all of the materials, and set up the table with all of the mixing bowls, sugar, skull molds, decorating baggies, meringue, and water.
By the time it hit 4:00, we had a few visitors who happened to be in BICAS for other business (like fixing their bikes and stuff). But they came about our little station and wanted to participate, which was all we could ask for! We taught them the process of mixing the meringue with the sugar and the water, then gently patting the mixture into the sugar skull molds. We also discussed Day of the Dead culture and the local Tucsonan All Souls’ Procession. It was really interesting and informative to be able to talk about these topics, as one of our visitors was Mexican, and he had specific personal memories to educate us as well.
Megan had some previously dried skulls (from her class at Fenster) that were ready to decorate, so as our visitors finished making their skulls, they were able to decorate the already-completed ones. Casey even joined in!
Dr. Garber’s class was that night at 5:00pm, which I had to attend, so I left Megan with the completion of the event. Later on, as we discussed what happened after I left, she told me that even more people dropped by, including some high school students who won the decorating challenge! Overall, it was a great experience that allowed us to contribute – in our own little way – community based art education to Tucson.
